Our Process
In February 2022, Omek began hosting quarterly events for the African diaspora and their allies to explore the cultural elements that have spread from Africa around the world. Each event focuses on a theme—such as jollof rice, storytelling, fashion, or language—and through discussions and games, participants explore the similarities and differences of these topics across the diaspora.
We supported the creative direction for the visual identity for these events, overseeing the design across all graphic, typographic, and event materials. We collaborated with Black Childish, aka Mickael Mehala, to establish the tone for the illustrations and overall concept. Mickael introduced the idea of stamps as a unifying symbol for the diaspora, representing travel, knowledge, and power. These stamps are prominently featured on promotional materials, speaker assets, and throughout event branding.
The bold typography developed for the events was designed to complement Omek’s brand fonts—Circular and Futura—while maintaining its own distinct look and feel. This typography, along with a grid and ink stamp design, adds personality to all event materials, including printed agendas, registration cards, name tags, food menus, presentations, and icebreaker questions.
Event photography plays a crucial role in bringing these gatherings to life, ensuring the intention behind the events is captured along with the activities. Photos are shared across Omek’s website, social media, and online platform to showcase the events and reinforce the community's mission.
Through this cohesive visual identity, the quarterly events not only foster learning and connection but also provide an engaging, culturally resonant experience for attendees.
